Parks Victoria
Parks Victoria was created in December 1996 through a merging of the National Parks Service and Melbourne Parks and Waterways.
It’s the custodian of an extremely diverse range of parks, waterways and cultural sites throughout Victoria, including 185 different kinds of parks, 11 marine sanctuaries, and thousands of natural features and culturally significant areas across the state.
In total these make up around 4.1 million hectares, or 17 per cent of Victoria.
Parks Victoria has an extremely strong commitment to conservation and is dedicated to preserving the natural and heritage values of its parks, bays, and waterways, and high level protection of sensitive areas.
Parklandmanagement is now a highly sophisticated operation, and Parks Victoria staff are a highly qualified team. Approximately 70 per cent of its employees are professionals with formal qualifications in park and reserve management, environmental management and recreation.
There are over 400 rangers based in Victorian parks, bays, and waterways to address the challenge of balancing the protection of natural heritage with the needs of visitors.
